経歴

Biography

5歳のときに父の旅一座の公演中に初舞台を踏む。1921年、アシスタント・カメラマンとして映画界へ。1927年、ハル・ローチの元、ローレル＆ハーディのコメディ映画の製作に参加。1932年にユニバーサルで助監督に昇格。RKOに移籍後は短編映画の監督を任される。1933年、監督デビューを果たす。その作品の多くがアメリカの家庭を舞台にしていたこともあり、「ドメスティック（家庭的）・リアリズムの巨匠」と評される。
