経歴

Biography

トロント大学を卒業後、1950年に渡米。CBCテレビやニューヨークのCBSテレビで多くの人気番組を手がけ、3度エミー賞を受賞する。1963年にコメディを監督してハリウッドに進出。ライト・コメディで好評を得るが、1965年の「シンシナティ・キッド」や、1966年の「アメリカ上陸作戦」のようなシリアスな作品を手がけるようになる。1967年、人種差別と闘う刑事を描いた「夜の大捜査線」でアカデミー作品賞を獲得。以降も犯罪映画「華麗なる夜に」や「屋根の上のバイオリン弾き」、ニューヨークに住むイタリア人家族を描いた「月の輝く夜に」など次々に発表し、アカデミー賞ノミネートの常連となる。
