Biography

インドで株商人の娘として裕福な家庭に生まれた。5歳の時に、ロンドンの寄宿学校に入学。その後も上流家庭の娘としての教育を受ける。演技はパリのコメディ・1937年、アレクサンダー・コルダと契約の後に「無敵艦隊」に出演する。共演者のローレンス・オリヴィエと恋に落ち、「嵐が丘」の出演のためハリウッドに渡ったオリヴィエを追って渡米。そこで、デヴィッド・O・セルズニックと出会い「風と共に去りぬ」のスカーレット・オハラ役に抜擢される。この作品でアカデミー主演女優賞を受け、1951年「欲望という名の電車」で再びアカデミー主演女優賞を獲得した。
