Biography

ユダヤ系東欧人の家系に生まれ、ベルイマンやビスコンティに影響を受けて映画監督を志す。18歳の時に家出してヨーロッパを転々とし、やがてブラジルに渡って市民権を取得、サンパウロを拠点とする。ブラジルの若手監督の運動“シネマ・ノーボ”に加わって短編ドキュメンタリーを撮った後、1975年に長編映画デビューする。1980年にブラジルのスラム街の少年たちを描いた「ピショット」で多くの賞を獲得した。次いで1985年にはじめての英語作品「蜘蛛女のキス」を発表。この作品はアカデミー監督賞にノミネートされて国際的な評価を得た。
